Pangan: Hypocritical hesitancy

THERE are people who waver and procrastinate on their plans to run for elective offices, but choose to reveal their real intentions at the last minute or just a shade before the deadline.

Take the case of Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio. She was quoted as saying, “I am not running for a national position as we (PRRD) both agree that only one of us will run for a national position.”

Previously, the older Duterte was so adamant to admit gearing for the presidency, only to reveal his true intention at the last minute. Such hypocrisy!

Her admirers/supporters still believe Sara would run for a national position. Davao Occidental Governor Claude Bautista said, “What is important is that she has the desire to serve the people and everything will follow. We believe in her leadership and I will always believe in her and I will always be her avid fan no matter what, now and forever.” See? Is it a case of hele, hele bago quiere?

On the issue of SALNs, why is it so hard for public officials to disclose their SALNs? Do these contain undisclosed wealth, the product of illegal acts?

The public is entitled to know of the financial dealings and standings of the officials they put to office. A public office is a public trust, remember?

A news report mentioned that Ombudsman Samuel Martires wants to open to the public the SALNs (Statement of Assets, Liabilities and Net Worth) submitted by all government officials and personnel, including PRRD to ensure transparency.

But here's the catch: persons making commentaries on published SALNs will face five years in prison in violation of RA 6713, or the SALN law. What? KJ ka naman, Ombudsman Martires!
