THE contractor of Nustar Resort and Casino in Cebu City where two construction workers fell to their deaths assured that they will provide assistance to the families of those who died.

Joseph Garcia, vice president for legal and business development for DDT Konstract Inc. (DDTKI), told SunStar Cebu that following the incident, they have been in constant communication with the families of the two workers.

“We are also guaranteeing all assistance and support be it financial or in other ways,” Garcia added.

On Tuesday, Sept. 21, 2021, two men working on the construction of the Nustar Resort and Casino at the South Road Properties (SRP) fell to their deaths after the cable of a suspended working gondola they were on snapped.

The fatalities were identified as Junnel Tunda-an, 28, and Richard Dabasol Jr., 39.

The Cebu City Office of the Building Official (OBO) has issued a cease and desist order (CDO) to the contractor.

Garcia said they have also submitted to the authorities their action plan and remedial measures in ensuring that the same incident will be mitigated if not be totally avoided.

“We have been in that project for a long period and we are actually in the finishing stage. Million manhours of safety has been recorded in that project and we will continue to adhere to our safety protocols and programs with a more vigilant look out on what had happened,” he said.

Following the incident, construction at the site has been suspended pending the result of the investigation.

Aside from ceasing operations for the meantime, DDTKI was also ordered to submit an incident report to OBO and explain why the gondola crashed from the 19th floor to the ground floor.
