Briones: A change of tack

Briones: A change of tack

I’m pretty sure I’ve said what needs to be said about the country and Cebu’s coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) situation in the last 17 months or so.

Many, by that I mean more than one or two persons, probably miss my quirky observations and comments delivered tongue in cheek. But a pandemic that has upended the whole planet tends to put a damper on things, which is why I’ve gotten on my high horse on several occasions during this period.

Don’t get me wrong.

I’m sticking to my guns about the need to get vaccinated and the need to move forward and concentrate on the economy to help the thousands of people who have been affected by the health crisis.

Let’s face it. We crossed our Rubicon when the government allowed people to leave their homes. At this point, it’s about managing the disease and reminding the public not to drop their guard. Trust me. We’ve learned to live with Covid. We’ve had no choice.

I have to admit I’ve stopped looking at the numbers for quite some time now. They depress me. And why on Earth does the health department insist on including the cumulative count when it releases its daily bulletin of Covid cases?

So Cebu City has had a little over 40,000 cases since April last year. So what? What’s more important is that it only logged 2,338 cases as of Friday, Sept. 24, 2021.

Spot the difference?

Anyway, as I said, I’ve said what there needs to be said about the issue so I should just keep mum.

I know many of you, or none, want to know what I think about the presidential election in May. At this point, though, it’s too early to tell since the filing of the certificate of candidacy hasn’t even started. There have been official announcements but these aren’t really “official” until the candidacies are formally recognized by the Commission on Elections.

Hmm. A national legislator who sidelines as a professional boxer. Or is it the other way around? It gets confusing. A former matinee idol who once posed in a skimpy swimsuit but has gained a lot of followers by doing the unthinkable and next to impossible in Manila. A former police general-turned politician who, according to Wikipedia, has earned the reputation of being a “watchdog” of the national budget.

So far, they’re the only ones who have come out, but there are others waiting in the wings.

In the meantime, I should find another topic to tackle in the upcoming weeks. Come to think of it, since I turned golden, I’ve been thinking about male menopause.

What say you?
