Malay College to boost tourism in Boracay

THE opening of the new Malay College in Boracay Island, Malay, Aklan next semester is expected to boost the tourism industry of this resort island.

Acting Malay Mayor Floribar Bautista said the Commission on Higher Education and the Technical Education Skills Development Authority (Tesda) has recently recognized the college as a registered academic institution.

"It has been the dream of Malay people for the past 20 years. I was still a councilor then. Currently, the college offers Bachelor of Science in Tourism Management courses and other Tesda-related courses," said Bautista.

Malay College is offering scholarship for Malay residents. Around 400 students have initially expressed their interest in enrolling in the said school.

"If the students failed in the scholarship slots, they could be enrolled in Tesda-related courses," said Bautista.

The Malay local government also plans to engage with hotels through a memorandum of agreement and understanding to train their students in becoming world-class tourism workers. (SunStar Philippines)
