PFL eyes Oct. 27 kickoff date for 2021 season

THE Philippines Football League (PFL) has a new kickoff date for the 2021 season but that still depends on a few conditions.

Following one-on-one meetings by the PFL and the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) with the participating clubs, the PFL season will open on Oct. 27, 2021 in a bubble at the PFF National Training Center in Carmona, Cavite.

“PFF is committed to have the PFL 2021 season this year when conditions permit,” said PPF general secretary, lawyer Edwin Gastanes in a report posted at the PFL’s official website.

“We understand how also important the league is for the clubs, sponsors and football fans.”

The two conditions that the organizers are looking at to push through with the opening is the lowering of the quarantine status of Carmona, Cavite from Modified Enhanced Community Quarantine (MECQ) to General Community Quarantine (GCQ) and at least six participating clubs.

Carmona is under MECQ until Oct. 15. Currently there are six clubs that are competing in the 2021 season—defending champion United Clark FC, Kaya FC-Iloilo, Stallion Laguna FC, Maharlika Manila FC, Mendiola FC 1991 and newly formed Dynamic Herb Cebu FC.

“The PFL season 2021 kickoff remains a primary objective,” said PFL commissioner Coco Torre.

“The staging of the season will help preserve the livelihood of the players, staff, officials and determine the League Standings based on sporting merit.”

The PFL is the country’s professional football league. The tournament serves as the qualifier for Asian’s top tier club tournament, AFC Champions League, and the AFC Cup.
