Quijano: Go hard or go out trying

They’re as big as it gets, and as if these two behemoths couldn’t up the ante, both Deontay Wilder and Tyson Fury came in at their heaviest for their careers at yesterday’s weigh-in.

Wilder weighed in at a rock solid 238 lbs while Fury hit the scales at 277 pounds, giving the latter a 39-pound weight advantage for their third fight.

Will the weight disparity matter?

STYLE. Methinks not so much, at least in so far as these two are concerned. In their first two meetings, Fury was always the heavier fighter, being naturally the bigger man standing at 6’10” to Wilder’s 6’7”.

Rather, the results of those fights were determined largely through strategy. Make no mistake, there’s no confusing these two in terms of style and approach.

Fury, despite being the bigger man, is the better boxer and all-around fighter. In contrast, nobody’s going to mistake Wilder for Floyd Mayweather Jr. He is proficient only at throwing bombs, and there’s a reason why he is considered to be the most dangerous knockout puncher in heavyweight history, record-wise.

POWER. But there’s a chance that Wilder’s gamble to come in at his heaviest might work to his advantage.

I think he is trying to come in heavy and strong so he can have more torque behind his punches and have the gravitas to withstand counter-artillery from Fury. Fury is a boxer but when a guy as big as him lands, it’s going to be hurt, nonetheless.

Wilder’s best chance is to play to his strengths and try to take Fury’s head off.

MY TAKE. I am tempted to take Wilder on this one. With a new trainer, I am hoping he can come up with a more refined technique on how to place his power punches perfectly and how to pace himself.

He will never outpunch or outwork Fury. All he can do is hope to hurt him and knock him out. In the first fight, he was able to knock Fury down twice, so it’s a doable prospect for him.

It’s a risky proposition, but there’s no other way to go about this. He should go out on his shield as a true warrior. Fury has reportedly had several distractions during training camp and has been known to go flaky at times. If his focus isn’t on this third fight, there’s a good chance of Wilder catching him with a fight-ending punch.

Go hard or go out trying, Deontay. That’s that.

LAST ROUND. It’s on my kumpare Eddy Basa who recently celebrated his birthday. Cheers!
