Sanchez: Marcos

Sanchez: Marcos

SO YOU think you are voting for Ferdinand “Bongbong” Romualdez-Marcos. You might end up voting for María Aurora Marcos. Or, for Tiburcio Marcos.

When there's María Antonia Aquino, then there's Monsour del Rosario, a Negrense action star. Another celebrity actor is Francisco Isko Moreno Domagoso.

Another president wannabe is Panfilo “Ping” Lacson, a Caviteño. Also, Emnanuel Pacquiao aka the Pacman, an evangelical Christian.

Finally, a devout Catholic servant leader María Leonor Gerona-Robredo has announced that she's running for the presidency. She's well-known for her tsinelas (slipper) leadership. Last time I checked, there are 18 candidates vying for the presidency.

It's simpler at the local elections.

Incumbent Negros Occidental Governor Eugenio "Bong" Lacson had two opponents -- former congressman lawyer Juan "John" Orola and self-proclaimed psychic and visionary Maria Socorro Sibulan.

In the City of Smiles, it's a toss-up between incumbent Bacolod City Mayor Evelio “Bing” Leonardia and former Negros Occidental Third District Representative Alfredo “Albee” Benitez in the May 2022 elections. In a press conference on October 5, 2021, Benitez and his runningmate, former councilor lawyer Caesar Distrito, presented their slate composed of 12 candidates for councilor after filing their certificates of candidacy under the Team Asenso Bacolod.

On October 6, Leonardia's Grupo Progreso also presented their entire slate.

Technically, candidates can only campaign during the period set by the Commission on Elections (Comelec).

For the 2022 elections, the campaign period for those running for president, vice president, senator, and party-lists starts on February 8, 2022. For aspiring members of the House of Representatives and regional, provincial, city, and municipal officials, it's on March 25, 2022. The campaign period for all candidates ends on May 7, 2022.

Section 80 of the Omnibus Election Code says that any election campaign or partisan political activity is prohibited outside the campaign period.

This applies not only to aspiring candidates but also to their supporters.

Campaigning is not yet allowed but you can watch their jingles over various Teleradyos.
