LOCAL police in two cities in Cebu are set to implement various measures in order to secure those visiting their dead loved ones during All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days in November.

In Talisay City, police officials are recommending to Mayor Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas Jr. to do what they did in 2020, that is to not allow cemetery visitations for certain days and to limit the number of people visiting public and private cemeteries in the City.

Lt. Col. Gerard Ace Pelare, Talisay City police chief, told SunStar Cebu that the measures they implemented during the All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days observation were effective in preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Pelare said he plans to submit his recommendations before Gullas during a stakeholder meeting that will be held within the week.

But Pelare said he is also amicable if the city government plans to open the cemeteries to the public on Nov. 1 and 2.

Pelare, however, said should the City allow it, he and his personnel will ensure that strict protocols are met to prevent the spread of Covid-19.

In 2020, the Talisay City Government closed all of its cemeteries from Oct. 30 until Nov. 4 as ordered by the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The City did allow the public to visit cemeteries from Oct. 15 to 30 but only within limited hours.

In Cebu City, local police are planning to deploy about 200 of their personnel to the City’s 21 public and private cemeteries from Oct. 18 to Nov. 4.

Col. Josefino Ligan, Cebu City Police Office director, said he will be deploying advance command posts to the city’s five major cemeteries namely those in Carreta, Calamba, Talamban, Pardo and Barrio Luz.

The advance command posts will serve as police desks for those who would like to ask for assistance.

Ligan added that like in previous years, they will prohibit liquor, sharp implements, food and even sound systems inside the cemeteries to ensure that the two-day observance remains solemn. (ANV, AYB / JKV)
