THE number of areas placed under granular lockdown in Metro Manila has further went down from 333 in October 1 to 139 as of October 15, said the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG).

DILG spokesperson Undersecretary Joseph Malaya said there were 896 areas under granular lockdown in mid-September, when the new alert level system was implemented in the National Capital Region (NCR).

The number went down to 333 on October 1 and 139 on October 15 due to the decreasing number of coronavirus infections and the increased vaccination in NCR, he added.

“So malaki ang pagbaba, consistent ito sa mga datos natin sa case transmission and increase in vaccination dito sa NCR (So there was a significant decrease and this is consistent to the data on case transmission and increase in vaccination here in NCR),” Malaya said in a Laging Hand public briefing Monday, October 18.

He said the granular lockdown implementation is part of the government’s strategy under the alert levels.

He added that of the 139 areas under granular lockdown, 33 are in Pasay City, 34 in Manila City, 13 in Quezon City, 27 in Pateros, 10 in Las Piñas City, and the rest in other areas.

At least 617 families have been affected, he said.

Malaya assured, however, that the government has been providing assistance to the affected families, stressing food packs were distributed by the Department of Social Welfare and Development in the affected local government units in NCR.

Metro Manila is now under the more relaxed Alert Level 3, which allows more businesses to open. The new alert level took effect last October 16.

Malaya said there were no untoward incidents so far since the alert level was lowered to 3 from 4, but he noted that several people have flocked to public places like parks over the weekend.

He reminded the public to follow the minimum health protocols despite the lowering of alert level to prevent the rise in Covid-19 cases.

“Kailangan po nating sundin ito and gamitin po natin yung pagmamahal sa bansa at sana po ay umiral ang disiplina (We need to follow the minimum health protocols, use our love for the country, and I hope that discipline will prevail),” he said.

He said mayors of Metro Manila supported the lowering of alert level and they have been informed of the guidelines.

“Nagkaroon po ng tamang paghahanda (There was enough preparations),” Malaya said. (Laureen Mondoñedo-Ynot/SunStar Philippines)
