DA launches tech transfer for mushroom production

THE Department of Agriculture (DA)-Central Luzon led the “Technology Transfer Ceremony and Product Launching cum Field Day” recently in Sitio Binbin in Barangay General Luna, Carranglan, Nueva Ecija.

The DA-Central Luzon formally awarded the technology for making mushroom crackers to members of the Binbin Women Gardeners ’Association (BWGA).

The technology is one of the products of several years of research into various value-adding or processing techniques to extend the shelf-life of fresh mushrooms, and further increase its value when it comes to the market.

The formal awarding of the technology to the selected beneficiaries was made possible through the project “Upscaling of Mushroom Crackers as Additional Income Source of Indigenous People in Carranglan, Nueva Ecija in Support to Alpas Covid-19.”

The project was funded by the DA-Bureau of Agricultural Research and conducted by DA-Central Luzon under the leadership of Dr. Emily A. Soriano, Agricultural Center Chief III of ROS-Magalang, Pampanga as Project Leader, in collaboration with the local government of Carranglan, Nueva Ecija through their Municipal Agriculture Office.

The project aims to commercialize mushroom crackers by awarding the technology to an indigenous group, and ensuring that it will be an additional source of income for every member, especially now during the pandemic.

BWGA was the selected beneficiary of the project because of their efforts to grow mushrooms from previous projects dropped by DA-Central Luzon.

BWGA was provided with the initial ingredients, packaging materials, and equipment needed for the bulk manufacture of mushroom crackers.
