Nietes signs with Probellum

FOUR-DIVISION world champion Donnie Nietes is the latest boxer to sign with the fastest growing promotional outfit, Probellum.

The 39-year-old Nietes joins fellow Filipino star Nonito Donaire Jr., who just recently inked a pact with Probellum, and the likes of Regis Prograis, Badou Jack, Ricky Burns and Paul Butler.

“We’re pleased to welcome such an illustrious boxer like Donnie Nietes to the team,” Probellum president Richard Schaefer said in a statement. “We have seen the lower weight classes finally receive the praise they deserve in recent years, and Donnie is a key part of that stacked super-flyweight division.”

Nietes owns the distinction as the longest reigning Filipino world champion and captured world titles in four different divisions: minimumweight, light flyweight, flyweight and super flyweight.

“It’s such a great pleasure to get this promotional contract with Probellum,” Nietes said.

“I am so proud to be part of it, and I am looking forward to fighting again soon so that I can continue to show my boxing abilities and technique.”

Nietes, who once worked as a janitor, won his first world title in 2007 after beating unbeaten Thai Pornsawan Porpramook by unanimous decision to grab the vacant World Boxing Organization (WBO) minimumweight belt in Cebu City.

Following a four-year reign at 105 pounds, Nietes moved up a division and won the WBO light flyweight strap with a unanimous decision over Ramon Garcia Hirales in Bacolod City in 2011.

He also won The Ring lineal light flyweight belt with a win over Moises Fuentes in 2014 and successfully defended his light flyweight belt nine times before moving up to flyweight.

He won the International Boxing Federation (IBF) flyweight belt, his third division crown, with a unanimous decision win over Komgrich Nantapech in 2017 in Cebu City.

He moved up to super flyweight in 2018 and settled for a split draw with fellow Filipino Aston Palicte in a WBO super flyweight fight in Inglewood, California.

He won his fourth division belt, the WBO super flyweight title, with a split decision over Kazuto Ioka in Macau in 2018.

“He has already won world titles in four divisions, making him a true legend of the sport, and we’re proud to now be working together as we look to help him claim world honors again in the near future,” said Schaefer.

In his 18-year career, Nietes has a record of 43 wins, a loss and five draws with 23 wins by way of knockout.

He’s currently ranked No. 3 by the WBO, No. 4 by the World Boxing Association, No. 6 in the World Boxing Council and No. 8 by The Ring in the super flyweight division.
