Andales wins WBO regional belt in Korea

ARAR Andales captured the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental minimumweight title with a seventh round stoppage of Vietnamese Minh Phat Sam last Oct. 23, 2021 at the Wadong Stadium in Ansan, South Korea.

The fight was stopped by the referee, with the advice of the ring physician, after Sam’s eyes were swollen shut.

With the win, Andales should move up in the WBO minimumweight ladder. He’s currently No. 14 in the WBO minimumweight division, wherein Wilfredo Mendez is the current titleholder.

The 22-year-old Andales improved to 13-2 with five knockouts, while Sam dropped to 7-4 with five knockouts.

Meanwhile, Michael Mendoza, the other Filipino in the event, lost to WBO Oriental flyweight champion Olimjon Nazarov.

Nazarov got the nod of all three judges with identical scores of 115-113.

Nazarov is now 25-6 with 14 knockouts, Mendoza fell to 11-2-2 with four knockouts.
