Get your popcorn ready and take your pick from these must-watch titles on Netflix this spooky season.
“Velvet Buzzsaw”
A malevolent force terrorizes members of the LA art scene by bringing paintings and art pieces to life in this satirical horror thriller starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rene Russo, Toni Collette, Natalia Dyer, David Diggs, among others. With a stacked cast and an offbeat story, the film is an unexpected and refreshing take on the horror genre that’s quite the visual trip.
“Fear Street Trilogy”
The three-part film adaptation of the R. L. Stine book series—split into three parts, namely 1994, 1978 and 1666—centers on the teens of Shadyside who try to uncover the truth about a curse that has haunted their sleepy town and its residents for generations. With a stellar ensemble of actors and smart writing, this has to be one of Netflix’s most ambitious projects and one that was pulled off quite well.
“Hypnotic”
Starring our bona fide Netflix scream queen Kate Siegel of “The Haunting” and “Midnight Mass” fame, this psychological horror thriller follows Jenn, a woman who undergoes hypnosis sessions with a renowned therapist named Dr. Collin Meade for her general anxiety, only to realize that there are terrifying effects to his methods.
“The Babysitter”
A film by McG (director of the 2000 “Charlie’s Angels” film), “The Babysitter” follows young student Cole as he fights for his life after finding out that his babysitter is part of a satanic cult. Equal parts thrilling and hilarious, this horror-comedy is the perfect watch for Halloween if you want to be anxiously gripping your seat while bursting in laughter in between.
“Cam”
Just when you thought plain identity theft was scary, wait ’til you’ve watched “Cam.” A cam girl named Alice (played by Madeline Brewer) fights to reclaim her identity when a doppelgänger takes over her livestreams and compromises her relationships. Tackling horror with an online media theme is not only relevant but also unnerving to watch.
“The Perfection”
Allison Williams (“Get Out”) and Logan Browning (“Dear White People”) play two talented cellists who do whatever it takes to get the other out of the picture for a spot in the limelight. The film does not hold back on the graphic and gory imagery so if you get queasy easily, this might be a little difficult to watch. Also, it’s nice to get some queer representation in horror!
