Airpods vs. MatePod

Huawei filed an application in China to register “Huawei Matepod” as a trademark for its headphones. Apple opposed the application on the ground that “Huawei Matepod” is confusingly similar to its “Pod,”“iPod,” “AirPods” and “EarPod” trademarks. Apple avers that “Huawei Matepod” infringed its said trademarks and that it could “have a negative impact on society.” The Trademark Office of the National Intellectual Property Administration of China (CNIPA) ruled against Apple saying that there is insufficient evidence of trademark infringement. The CNIPA held that “the English spelling of the brands is different and the differences in pronunciation and general appearance are different”. Apple is appealing the decision. (www.remonews.com)
