Lacson: Climate Change: A catalyst to worsen existing problems

THE 12th Global Global Warming and Climate Change Consciousness Week will be celebrated on November 18-25, 2021 with the theme "Adapting For A Sustainable Future." The Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Service (DRRMS) of the Department of Education spearheaded the conduct of the Regional Climate Change Caravan (RCCC) as an avenue to raise awareness on Climate Change focusing on reforestation, food security, waste reduction and management in Central Luzon.

Climate change is considered a global crisis that affects both developed and less developed countries like the Philippines. As a worldwide problem, climate change will not create new problems, rather, it will act as a catalyst to worsen the existing difficulties in less developed countries like decreasing resources for clean water and air, food security, and solid waste management. In the Philippines, Region III (Central Luzon) is among the country’s hazard-prone areas, with typhoons and floods as the most common events affecting its seven (7) provinces.

Having these in mind, it is but appropriate for us to make drastic efforts to help reduce the negative impacts of climate change through advocacy and education not only for our young learners but for all our employees, officials, and stakeholders. These activities include the following:

Project NaRRA (Narra Tree Reseeding for Resilience Advocacy) – which aims to establish Narra Tree Nurseries in 5 Pilot Schools to serve as source of seedling in future tree planting activities;

Project ProTECT (Providing Tenable Ecosystem for Coastal Townies) a tree planting activity in Barangay Pamarawan, which aims plant 500 bitaog trees in an island community to provide protection and security;

Project HAPAG (Providing Tenable Ecosystem for Coastal Townies) – a project that seeks to establish Planting through hydroponics in Schools;

CAMP KLIMA – CLIMATE CHANGE CAMP - a webinar presentation focusing on awareness and improve advocacies to mitigate or adapt to the effects of Climate Change on Food Security; and the

BAKAWAN TREE PLANTING AND GROWING PROJECT – a project that seeks to conduct tree planting activities to protect the province of Aurora on its eastern boundaries with coastal lines of the Pacific Ocean.

Through these various projects and activities, along with the integration of significant knowledge and information in our curriculum, we hope that we can contribute to the mitigation of the harmful effects of climate change and help advocate good practices in environmental conservation and protection among our learners and personnel.
