Bernaldez faces Cortes in Las Vegas

FEATHERWEIGHT prospect Mark Bernaldez looks for his first huge win in the United States as he takes on undefeated Andres Cortes in an eight-round fight in a Top Rank-promoted show on Nov. 6, 2021 (PH time) at the Virgin Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Since campaigning in the US in 2019, Bernaldez went 5-2. He has yet to win against an elite opponent in seven fights on American soil. His wins are against journeymen Juan Kantun, Hector Suarez, Julian Aristule, David Berna and German Meraz. He lost his two fights against elite opponents in world-rated Albert Bell and Andy Vences.

Cortes is one of the fighters that are being groomed by Bob Arum to be one of the sport’s future stars. The 24-year-old Las Vegas native is coming off the biggest win of his career—an impressive first round knockout of former world title challenger Genesis Servania, Bernaldez’s former teammate from the now-defunct ALA Gym.

The 27-year-old Bernaldez tipped the scales at 131.2 pounds, while Cortes weighed in a bit heavier at 131.6 pounds.

Bernaldez, who trains at the Moro’s Gym in Miami, Florida, is 23-4 with 17 knockouts, while Cortes is 15-0 with eight knockouts.

The Bernaldez vs. Cortes fight is one of the featured fights of the women’s super featherweight fight between World Boxing Organization champion Mikaela Mayer (15-0, 5 KOs) and International Boxing Federation titleholder Maiva Hamadouche (22-1, 18 KOs).
