9 rescued, 1 missing after motor banca capsizes on Hilutongan Channel

NINE people were rescued after a motor banca bound for Lapu-Lapu City from Olango Island capsized around 9 p.m. Monday, November 8, 2021.

However, one of the 10 passengers remained missing, Nagiel Banacia, head of Lapu-Lapu City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office said Tuesday, Nov. 9, 2021.

According to the initial investigation, the ten passengers onboard the motor banca left Olango at 8 p.m. bound for Lapu-Lapu City.

Banacia said while traversing the Hilutongan Channel, big waves hit the motor banca which resulted in its capsizing.

The passengers reportedly came from a birthday celebration.

A passing vessel, Seaborne Cargo 5, bound for Tagbilaran, Bohol rescued eight of the passengers and brought to Bohol. They later returned home to Lapu-Lapu City on Tuesday afternoon. The ninth passenger was rescued separately and was brought to Punta Engaño after.
