NEARLY 1,000 families in eight barangays nearby Davao River were evacuated following the rising floodwater brought about by the heavy downpour on Tuesday evening, November 9, 2021.
Davao City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) Head Alfredo Baloran told SunStar Davao in a phone interview on Wednesday afternoon, that 967 families were evacuated from puroks along the riverbanks, including in Tigatto, Bankerohan, and Ma-a.
Baloran has yet to provide a detailed list of areas greatly affected by the flooding, with some areas experiencing knee-level floods.
As of 3 p.m., the water level in Davao River has been tagged under Code Yellow, wherein it already subsided to a normal level.
"Hopefully tuloy-tuloy na ang pagbaba sa upstream sa Davao River (the upstream of the Davao River would subside)," he said.
No major casualties were recorded, he said.
Baloran said the heavy rain was due to the tail-end of the frontal system. It is the boundary between the easterlies and the northeast monsoon or Hanging Amihan.
"Naa naman gud ta sa (We are at the) La Niña season. Based sa (on the) Pagasa forecast, the peak of La Niña is from November to the first quarter of next year," he said.
The CDRRMO official said it is likely that some areas in the city would experience flooding due to "above normal rainfall" in the afternoon and late evening.
Baloran said their personnel will be on standby for possible evacuation.
He also reminded residents to adhere to the warnings and announcements of their respective barangay disaster officials, especially in times of pre-emptive evacuation.
He added that households nearby landslide-prone areas are advised to be vigilant and evacuate.
Recently, around 850 households were affected by flooding that followed a thunderstorm on October 25, wherein chest-level flooding was experienced in flood-prone areas such as Laverna Hills Subdivision in Barangay Cabantian.
