Ombion: Disqualification case vs BBM: 'Respice finem?'

WILL it be the end of everything for BBM and Marcoses? Isn't Bongbong Marcos (BBM) like his father also a mortal?

The aim of disqualification case vs BBM, allegedly masterminded by the so-called yellow opposition led by one of its key movers, former Justice Secretary Carpio, is clear -- to prevent him from running for the highest public post of the land in order to make the way to presidency easier for Vice President Leni Robredo.

The disqualification case stemmed from reported criminal cases of conviction vs BBM and his family, and under the Constitution and Comelec rules, any person with conviction cases is disqualified for any public post.

Of course, it does not follow that VP Leni would have an easy win if BBM is disqualified given the fact that 2022 presidency has become a multi-cornered fight, where other contenders, Senator Ping Lacson, Senator Manny Pacquiao, Manila Mayor Isko Moreno, and BBM, are considered giants in Philippine politics.

Still, for BBM, the son of former President Ferdinand Marcos and now a presidential aspirant, the disqualification case, on top of enormous negative, sometimes too vindictive, propaganda lodged against him, his late father and his family, is an added thorn in the ass, and a mighty challenge to overcome.

Can it be considered the end, the "respicefinem," for BBM if he is disqualified? Does he stand a chance to reverse the case, or skirt it, and proceed in his campaign to win the presidency by all means at all costs?

Well, despite the crippling weight of the case and other propaganda charges against BBM and his family, the Marcoses are not yet a push over in Philippine politics. In fact, their resources, machinery and influence from the corridor of power down the village street remain formidable and in fact can still overturn anything and everything that stands in their way.

The bigger challenge as of late is the breaking, or perhaps, the expected news, that Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio has withdrawn her candidacy for mayoralty of Davao, and could run as president or vice president of BBM.

If such a scenario happens, then BBM has only strengthened his quest for presidency or vice presidency, or whichever, because then his troops would only have to take care of the north, and let Sara Duterte handle the south and central Philippines.

In the face of the formidable tandem of BBM-SZD or SZD-BBM, which will naturally have the full backing of the administration, the only chance of all other presidentiables is to forget the disqualification case, abandon their respective agenda, and put up a united front agenda and slate, and give this administration bets a fight that will go down the Philippine contemporary history as the greatest political battle of modern-day David and Goliath.

For BBM et al, it is apparent that it is not going to be a "respice finem," but an epic fight " Flectere si nequeo superos, Acheronta movebo," or that "I cannot move Heaven, I will raise Hell."

For the opposition, it is time to give each other assurance, and a moment for "Timendi causa estnescire," or to talk to each and cast all the unknown and fears, to eventually pave the way for an epic battle.

If the opposition fails to achieve their only means to have a shot at victory, the next generation will have no one to blame but them.

And perhaps, they cannot and should not blame the next generation which might take a different path to real social change.
