Custodio: More Covid thoughts

Custodio: More Covid thoughts

THE recent relaxing of the liquor ban, curfews, and other Covid protocol matters must have been a sigh of relief for our regular folk as well as business owners because it meant longer hours outside both for business and pleasure. I remember how the traffic swelled on the day that these changes were announced, everybody seemed to be out! I also noticed more people on the streets, the markets seemed more crowded and it looked like everyone seemed happier.

I understand the need for balance. I get the need to regain economic stability and viability. The past two years have been difficult on everyone and this was a welcomed light at the end of the long tunnel. Really, I get it! Covid has taken a toll on anyone and we could all use a break from the new normal that we needed to adopt due to the circumstances brought about by the virus. I am almost sure that you have either shaken your head or winced from the sight of people in masks and face shields everywhere in the City. Who would have thought it would become the norm right? Needless to say, we had to do a lot of tweaking all because of this vicious enemy that we cannot see!

How weird has it become that we all now have QR (quick response) codes? Masks, face shields, social distancing, and PPEs (personal protective equipment) are now commonplace. Working from home, Zoom meetings and medical teleconsultation has become routine. Those who need to report to work have had their share of SafeDavao text messages, quarantines, and swabs. We have made a lot of adjustments to ever-changing protocols. It is exhausting, depressing, and infuriating! Any semblance to pre-Covid days is definitely welcome I agree, but we have to remain mindful to achieve.

Christmas is coming and with things improving Covid-wise, we do have reasons to rejoice and really feel the Christmas spirit! Let’s enjoy it sensibly and with caution. I hope we do not overdo the “celebration.” This “freedom'' still comes with much responsibility. Although it looks like we are finally heading for better days, Covid is pretty much out there and it continues to mutate. We need to keep this in mind. We should still be mindful of the basic protocols because they will continue to safeguard us. Everyone should still make it their goal to be vaccinated because it prevents serious covid complications including death. Getting immunized not only protects the person who gets it, but it also shields the people around them. By being responsible citizens, we help in keeping everyone safe and healthy. If we work together, 2022 will be nothing short of great!

Happy weekend everyone!
