REPRESENTATIVES of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT)-Negros Occidental visited San Carlos on Monday, November 15, to survey the area for the planning stage of the Free Wi-Fi Project.

Engineer Mary Jane Maravilla, Information Technology Officer I of DICT-Negros Occidental, said the Free Wi-Fi is a joint project of the Province, DICT and San Carlos City Government with the purpose of providing free internet access to people in public places.

Maravilla said San Carlos City is among the nine cities and municipalities of Negros Occidental prioritized in this project.

She said they have identified 116 public sites while the LGU-San Carlos would be prioritizing the 18 Barangay Halls, Tech4Ed Centers and other significant public places since these areas are already capable for easier access for the installation where estimate cost of the project can also be made easy.

Maravilla also said that as of now, they are trying to resolve certain issues and challenges such as areas which aren’t accessible for huge trucks that will be used during the installation and low lying areas that might affect the internet connection.

City Administrator Atty. Estefanio S. Libutan Jr., together with Engr. Joseph A. Binghay, Information Technology Officer and head of Information Technology and Computer Services Office (ITCSO), and staff of the City Planning and Development Coordinator’s Office were present during the discussion relating to the process of the project and installation.

Engineer Rovic Saison, Engineer II; Jay Alfaras, Engineer 1; and Jose Rafael Lito Gayares of DICT–Negros Occidental were also present during the short meeting. (PR)
