A FEW days before the Yuletide season starts, prices of pork in Negros Occidental remained stable at P250 to P260 per kilo.

Provincial veterinarian Renante Decena also assured that there is no shortage of pork supply in the province, which they release at market hubs in Luzon as well as the neighboring islands of Cebu and Panay, Decena said.

Decena said the prices of pork in some of these areas are increasing.

He said local producers are capable of balancing the current supply of pork in the province.

As for the supply of chicken, Decena said they are currently having problems with the availability of feeds, which recently had a price hike.

The provincial veterinarian said several local integrators have slowed down that ultimately caused a hike in the price of broiler chickens.

He said the supply of free-range chicken can compensate with the requirement, as Negros Occidental has the most number of chicken heads in Western Visayas with a population of 3 to 5 million.

Negros Occidental is consuming 1.5 million broiler chickens monthly, PVO records showed.

Poultry integrators from Cebu and Cagayan de Oro are also helping in supplying chicken in Negros Occidental alongside three local chicken integrators in the province.

The price of chicken is expected to increase soon due to the hike in demand, considering that the province has now slid to Alert Level 2 in terms of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) transmission, Decena said. He added that there will be more gatherings and many are ordering food.

Meanwhile, a local proprietor from one of the lechon stalls in Barangay 36 in Bacolod said they are expecting a hike in the price of lechon in the coming days as the Holiday season gets nearer.

The current prince of lechon is at P4,500, however, the price could spike around P5,000 during the Holiday season.
