THE National Housing Authority Central Visayas (NHA 7) broke ground for the building of 169 housing units in the northeastern Cebu town of Poro on Friday, Nov. 19, 2021 under the program to resettle typhoon Yolanda survivors.

Steadfast Builders Construction Corp. and Ascentia Construction will now start the construction of the housing units at the Poro Permanent Housing Project at the Esperanza Heights Village in Barangay Esperanza, the NHA 7 announced.

The raffle and awarding of the housing units took place on the same day.

Among those present at the groundbreaking were Poro Mayor Edgar Rama and representatives from the NHA 7 and Steadfast Builders Construction Corp.

The contractors have committed to complete the construction of the homes before the middle of next year.

As with the 406 housing units the NHA 7 broke ground on in the neighboring town of Pilar last Nov. 4, the start of the construction of the homes in Poro came with some help from the Inter-Agency Task Force-Yolanda headed by Cabinet Secretary Karlo Nograles and the Office of the Presidential Assistant for the Visayas led by Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino.

Pilar and Poro, both in the Camotes Islands, were among the 15 towns in northern Cebu hardest hit by super typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) eight years ago on Nov. 8, 2013.

The typhoon destroyed houses, displaced residents and forced action to relocate settlers in so-called no-build zones or areas within 40 meters from the shoreline.

As of Sept. 30, the NHA had completed 148,000 of the 204,000 housing units targeted as of 2014 for Yolanda survivors nationwide.

NHA general manager Marcelino Escalada Jr. said 24,526 more units were targeted for completion by December, and 21,574 by the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term in June 2022.
