Briones: Opening the oval

When will the Cebu City Government open the Cebu City Sports Center (CCSC)?

I know there are other pressing matters at hand, but I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one wondering.

The facility was closed to the public after it was converted into a quarantine or isolation center when the city and the rest of Cebu Island experienced a surge in coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases sometime in August.

Although I was against the move, I decided to keep my mouth shut. Even if there were so many other alternative sites the City could have used. Even if the facility was better off being used as a vaccination center. Even if Cebuanos actually benefited from an open CCSC because that meant they could keep fit and healthy amid the ongoing health crisis.

But hey, I’m a team player. If the captain says, “throw the ball,” I will throw it. After all, desperate times call for desperate measures. And the situation in Cebu back in August was pretty dire. City Hall’s priority was to try and control the situation before it got out of hand.

Bear in mind, it shouldn’t have been caught flat-footed. It was well aware of the ebb and flow of Covid-19 tides. It should have been prepared for the eventuality.

According to Lisa Maragakis, M.D., M.P.H., an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins Medicine, “the overall pattern of the coronavirus pandemic so far has been a series of Covid-19 waves: surges in new cases followed by declines.”

But never mind that. The worst is behind us.

Or, at the very least, authorities have an inkling of what to do should cases climb again. They know that majority of severe cases or fatalities in August were unvaccinated, which might explain why the government has ramped up its vaccination program.

Anyway, it’s a Sunday. People should chill and not have to listen to me rant. With many restrictions eased, they don’t need to be cooped up inside their homes. If they want, they can go to the beach, or shop at the mall. They don’t even have to wear a face shield.

For all intents and purposes, life is back to the way it was before Covid-19 arrived. Of course, people still have to wear masks. Or be fully vaccinated if they want to eat in restaurants. But that’s a small price to pay for a semblance of normality.

Now, wouldn’t it be nice to be able to jog or brisk walk in a facility that was built for these activities? As an added precaution, the City can always limit entry to only those who are fully vaccinated.

I’m just saying.
