Maasin City herd immunity within reach

HERD immunity is within reach in Maasin City following the intensive vaccination drive against the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

Maasin City Mayor Nacional Mercado said they aimed to achieve herd immunity by December 2021.

As of Friday, November 19, 2021, the city has already reached a 67.12 percent vaccination rate, with at least one dose out of 70 percent of the population, including 12 to 17 years old residents.

Mercado said they are targeting the inoculation of 63,784 people in the city.

“Be a part of ending the Covid-19 pandemic. Let’s get vaccinated,” Mercado urged the public.

The city administered vaccines to 42,813 people for the first dose, while 20,806 for the second dose.

As of November 19, Maasin has six active cases of Covid-19.

“The City Government of Maasin would like to ask for your continued support and cooperation to prevent the spread of the virus. Let’s always practice the infection-prevention and control measures,” Mercado said.

Meanwhile, the regional department said the overall rate that the region has achieved is currently at 45.3 percent.

“Our best hope in beating the pandemic is when herd immunity is achieved. The support from local government units and local chief executives is also vital in the demand generation of the Covid-19 vaccination, regardless of vaccine brand,” the Department of Health-Eastern Visayas said.

To date, the region has received a total of 4,214,410 doses of Covid-19 vaccines.

Over 2.5 million vaccines have so far been administered.

According to the regional health department, more than 1 million residents of Eastern Visayas are fully vaccinated against while around 1.5 million have received their first dose. (SunStar Philippines)
