Viray: Quit while you're ahead

ONE of the meaningful advice I received from my lolo is: “Quit while you’re ahead!”

As a lawyer, on cross-examination, I usually end up my questions when I score a point before the witness can recover. This would leave a lasting impression upon the Judge that I am in control.

When the outgoing Mayor asked me on what step he should do in the 2022 elections, I replied “Quit while you’re ahead!” You are ahead in making the City business friendly. You’re ahead in the construction of the public market. You’re ahead in reclaiming a portion of the Paskuhan Village. You’re ahead in making education, your priority. We were ranked No. 16 out of 18 Local Government Units, now we are No. 1!!!

This is in stark contrast to the retirement of boxer Manny Pacquaio. Pacquiao’s record of 8 division championship is unmatched. He could have retired years back after defeating Mexican boxers one after the other. He could have retired after the Mayweather match. He would have retired after reclaiming the lightweight championship. But he refused to retire and went on to fight an unknown Cuban replacement. He lost badly because of his age. His timing is off as he wants to be President of this country. His not so good showing in the surveys can be attributed to his quitting when he was no longer ahead.

You cannot fight the aging process. Vice Presidents Jejomar Binay and Noli de Castro are in their 80’s. Benjamin Abalos of Mandaluyong is in his 80’s. Oca Rodriguez is in his 75’s. Ray Pecson is in his 80’s. They have had the best years of their life. They were entrusted with the gift of public service. They have come out of retirement; they are candidates for elective positions again. They seem to forget that there is a time to retire. At least Noli realized that he is finished with politics so he withdrew.

After three terms as a City Mayor, Edwin "EdSa" Santiago leaves a legacy of:

Hall of Famer – Seal of Good Governance from the Department of Local Government;

Winner of the Most Business Friendly City;

An ISO Certification (a rare feat for a Local Government Unit);

A Civic Center in Del Rosario having a top of the line, Smart City.

The best time to quit for EdSa is now. He is ahead!
