Cebu bands Kiss Puppy and Cosmic Kid collaborated on a split EP release on Oct. 29, 2021. The EP features two songs per band, which were previously released as singles exclusive for digital release.
The EP will serve as the artists’ way of connecting with their fans and listeners alike through physical formats such as cassette tapes produced by record label and printing press PAWN Records.
The EP features singles like “Gum In My Pocket” by Kiss Puppy and “Maintaining Distance” by Cosmic Kid. These tracks were released as early as April 29, 2020, and made their premiere through a Spotify podcast/radio show dubbed “PAWNCast.”
The delay of the EP release is attributed to the pandemic, but both groups are excited about the project finally coming to light.
“The idea to make a split EP started way back around 2015 when we were playing shows at HeadquarterZ—a now-defunct bar that was known for hosting an innumerable amount of shows and for being one of the epicenters of the Cebu music scene at the time. I was inspired by US-based bands I was into that were putting out split EPs as a way to put music out as fast as they can and tour to build recognition,” said Wes Bacareza, Cosmic Kid vocalist and bassist.
“The experience was so unique. We barely even meet because this is an independent collaboration between two bands,” shared Kiss Puppy vocalist Kersly Potter.
“Most of the songs we decided to release were written even before the split was planned. It was a fast cramming process of recording. I didn’t even expect this split to push through because of the pandemic but we still did.”
The bands likened the EP release in physical format as their way of contributing to a local community into analog music consumption.
“I’m so happy to be partnering with a dedicated band like Cosmic Kid. We have similar taste in aesthetics and I’m so pleased with Wes directing everything as I trust his old school art direction more than mine,” added Potter.
