Tell it to SunStar: Protect biodiversity and protect the common homeland of mankind

The Earth is mankind’s homeland. Biodiversity is the bloodline and foundation of the Earth’s life, which makes the Earth full of vitality and is also the basis for human survival and development. Protecting biodiversity helps maintain the Earth’s homeland and promote the sustainable development of mankind.

At present, the global species extinction rate is accelerating. The loss of biodiversity, climate change, land degradation and desertification, ocean degradation and pollution pose major risks to human survival and development. Changes in land and ocean use, overexploitation, climate change, pollution and invasive alien species are the direct causes of these crises.

It is time for mankind to take measures to curb and reverse the loss of biodiversity. Such actions would include addressing changes in land and ocean use, strengthening the protection and restoration of ecosystems, mitigating climate change, reducing pollution, controlling invasive alien species and preventing overexploitation. We need to take action to reform the economic and financial system, ensure sustainable production and consumption, and reduce waste.

As one of the countries with the richest biodiversity in the world, China has always attached great importance to the protection of biodiversity. The Chinese government insists on giving priority to ecology and green development, continuously strengthening the protection and restoration of ecosystems, coordinating the promotion of biodiversity conservation and poverty reduction. In addition, the Chinese government is fully involved in global biodiversity governance, and promoting biodiversity conservation to achieve remarkable results.

The 15th Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity was held on Oct. 11, 2021 in Kunming, China. It carried the theme of “Ecological Civilization: Building a Shared Future for All Life on Earth.” The conference aims to promote the formulation of a “Post-2020 Global Biodiversity Framework.” The conference participants met to advance negotiations on the global biodiversity framework for the post-2020 period. They set goals and clear paths for future global biodiversity conservation, promote global biodiversity governance to a new level, and inject new impetus into global environmental governance.”

At the conference, President Xi Jinping proposed the following: “building an Earth home with harmonious coexistence between man and nature, building an earth home with coordinated economic and environmental progress and building an earth home with common development of all countries in the world.” These proposals are a profound revelation of the harmonious coexistence between man and nature and a profound insight into the need to promote common development and jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind under common challenges.

In the future, China will take more vigorous and more concrete measures to promote biodiversity conservation. China will compile a national biodiversity conservation strategy and action plan for the new era, and promote the deep integration and coordinated development of biodiversity conservation and economic society. It will continue to promote major projects of biodiversity conservation, so that important ecosystems, biological species and biological genetic resources are fully protected. Further, China will strengthen public awareness through education and knowledge dissemination of biodiversity protection to guide and drive the general public to actively participate in biodiversity protection.

Mankind is a whole, and the Earth is our home. Only by building a community of life on Earth can we cope with various global challenges and build a beautiful home for mankind. Human beings face common challenges, and no one or any single country can stand alone. Only by working together and coexisting in harmony can mankind build a good ecological environment.

This is not only natural wealth, but also economic wealth, and the common wealth of mankind.

China is willing to work with other countries to plan economic and social development from the perspective of the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, promote the harmonious coexistence of man and nature, man and man, and man and society. It’s a virtuous circle, all-round development, and sustained prosperity, which will open a new journey of high-quality development for humans. The overall objective is to promote the building of a community with a shared future for mankind, and jointly build a better world.
