THE late Archbishop Teofilo Camomot may be declared as “Venerable,” or the second step toward sainthood, before the end of the year.

This was confirmed by Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma during a gathering with Cebu’s media at his residence on Friday, December 4, 2021.

Palma told reporters that he was informed by Vatican officials on the possibility of Camomot’s elevation before the end of the 500th Year of Christianity (500YOC) celebration this year, which was centered in Cebu.

“We do believe, we hope, that Bishop Camomot may be declared venerable before the end of the year, which is really wonderful news for us now that we are nearing the closing of the 500 YOC,” Palma said.

He asked Cebuano Catholics to continue praying for Camomot even after he is raised to the rank of “Venerable” since this will also be the beginning of the process of beatification or to declare him as “Blessed,” the third of four steps toward sainthood.

In November this year, members of the Theological Commission of the Congregation for the Causes of Saints in Vatican City gave their “unanimous affirmative vote” to Camomot’s heroic virtues after assessing the “positio” or the dissertation on Camomot’s life.

Following the approval of Camomot’s positio, it will be forwarded for further examination by another commission composed of bishops and cardinals working under the Congregation.

Upon completion of their study, the cause will be presented to Pope Francis for his approval.

If Pope Francis gives his approval, Camomot will be declared “Venerable.”

At present, Camomot is a “Servant of God,” a title given to him by Palma while his cause for sainthood is still under investigation.
