TOKYO Olympics 2020 skateboarder Margielyn Didal has been declared “Adopted Citizen” of Borongan City, Eastern Samar, following a resolution issued by the City Council on Monday, December 6, 2021.

“We are declaring you as an adopted daughter of the city. You have all the rights and privileges of being a citizen of this beautiful city of Borongan,” said Borongan Mayor Jose Ivan Dayan Agda during the special session.

“Here in Borongan, we will pamper you because we are very very proud of you. You really represent the best of the Filipino people,” added the mayor after Didal graced the first day of the 2021 Surf in the City on Monday, December 6.

Agda lauded Dida “for representing the country in the international stage and for being a positive role model to Filipino youth.”

Rupert Ambil, the chairman of Surf in the City, invited Didal to Borongan to observe the event and to give insights to the city for its planned skateboard park.

“Surf in the City goes beyond one sport. It’s all about giving opportunities to the Borongan youth through sports. Margielyn is a positive role model to our youth. With her visit, we hope to inspire more youth to go into sports,” Ambil said.

Didal was ecstatic in receiving the award, adding that this is her first time to visit the city.

“Thank you for the overwhelming welcome. Thank you for having me here. I hope to come back in the future,” the 22-year-old Olympian said.

Didal rose to fame during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, where she made a debut in the finals.

Despite placing seventh in the skateboarding women’s street event, the professional street skateboarder won the admiration of many international fans for her resilience. She competed despite having an injury.

Fans were also captivated by Didal’s positive energy, with her beaming smile despite failing to land on her tricks.

In 2018, Didal won a gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games and was named as 25 Most Influential Teens of 2018. She was awarded the Asia Skater of the Year in 2020.

Meanwhile, Ambil said this year’s Surf in the City was the first leg of the 2022 Philippine Surfing Championship Tour.

“This is the first national surfing competition since the Covid-19 pandemic,” he added.

Over 200 athletes from six regions were competing in various surf events.

Surf in the City was co-presented by the City Government of Borongan, the Surfriders Club of Eastern Samar, and the Philippine Surfing Championship Tour.

The surfing competition was also supported by the Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta Partylist, Savepoint Plus Philippines, and Globe Telecom.

Aside from surfing, the city is also hosting beach football, skateboarding, and concert events.
