PRESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has appointed 4th Infantry Division commander Major General Romeo Brawner as the new chief of the Philippine Army.

Brawner replaced Lieutenant General Andres Centino, who was named as the new Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) in November.

Brawner is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Makatao” Class of 1989.

He previously held positions such as the first Deputy Chief of Staff for Financial Management, J10, an office which was newly activated in December 2020; commandant of cadets of the PMA; and commander of the 103rd Brigade during the liberation of Marawi City.

Brawner was also awarded as one of the country's Most Outstanding Filipino soldiers in 2013 as Special Forces and Airborne Officer.

In an interview, he said one of his top priorities is the health, welfare and morale of the troops, as well as their families.

“Itong mga tropa natin, these are the most important resource of the Philippine Army, ‘yung tropa natin, tao. Tapos, of course, magfo-focus tayo sa trabaho natin sa core competency natin, which is war fighting, so dun natin ide-develop ‘yung capability ng, the army soldier, and the army as an organization,” he said.

“Dun magre-revolve ‘yung capability development natin so that ready rin tayo not just for internal operations but also external defense,” he added.

He said they will also work double time in order to achieve the administration’s goal of defeating the New People’s Army before the end of President Rodrigo Duterte’s term. (SunStar Philippines)
