THE Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral celebrated the Solemnity of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception with an Episcopal Coronation and short procession Wednesday, Dec. 8, 2021.

Cebu Auxiliary Bishop Midyphil Bermejo Billones concelebrated the mass that was followed by the coronation of the image of the Immaculate Conception.

In his homily, Billones said in order for our savior to come to us in the pure form of love that saves, He passed through the Blessed Virgin Mother receiving prevenient grace through the Immaculate Conception.

The bishop further said it is not an accident in history that our country is placed under the protection of the Immaculate Conception and no matter how sinful and troubled we are, there is a mother who will help and never leave us.

“She will look for us and when she finds us, she will lead us back to Jesus Christ,” Billones said.

Cebu Archbishop Jose Palma signed a decree that gives approval for the Episcopal Coronation of the image of the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception to coincide with the celebration of the feast day of the Cebu Metropolitan Cathedral Parish.

In an interview with SunStar Cebu, Billones said the coronation is a gesture of faith that when the Blessed Mother is crowned, she is also crowned as the mother of everyone’s heart.

“We acknowledge Mary’s role as helper and intercessor. With her, we can overcome and cope with the struggles,” Billones said.

The bishop added that the Covid-19 pandemic might bring challenges that the public might complain about, but the spirit of Christmas should be an invitation to be faithful as it generates hope and resiliency.

“We can handle challenges in the new year to come; we will be guided in choosing the next batch of leaders as we choose wisely and based on faith,” said Billones.

After the holy mass, a procession of the image of the Our Lady of Immaculate Conception was held within the compound of the cathedral.

December 8 of every year is declared as a special nonworking holiday by virtue of Republic Act 10966.
