PHILIPPINE National Police (PNP) Chief Police General Dionardo Carlos said a “person of interest” has been identified in the ongoing investigation on the murder of journalist Jesus “Jess” Malabanan in Calbayog City.

“This strengthens the possibility that the killing of Malabanan may have been be more personal, than work-related,” said Carlos on Monday, December 13, 2021.

But the PNP chief declined to identify the person of interest, saying “this development will be further validated” as the Special Investigation Task Group Malabanan was set to convene for another case conference.

“We are exerting more efforts to establish the motive, identify the perpetrators and build a strong case leading to a successful prosecution,” Carlos said in a statement.

In the information released by the Police Regional Office-Eastern Visayas, it said Task Group “Malabanan” carried on its investigation.

It added they have extracted affidavits from a number of witnesses and footages from closed-circuit television (CCTV) cameras in the area.

As of December 13, Task Group "Malabanan" held another case conference presided by Colonel Jonathan Cabal, deputy regional director for operations, as the overall supervisor.

Also in attendance were task group members led by Colonel Peter Uy Limbauan, task group commander and the secretariat, along with Undersecretary Joel Egco of the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS) from the Office of the President.

“New information gathered by the group were comprehensively discussed during the said conference,” the police regional command said.
