Storm signal 4 now up in some Visayas, Mindanao areas

STATE weather forecasters warned of “very destructive typhoon-force winds” in some areas in the Visayas and Mindanao as it raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal (TCWS) Number 4, stressing Typhoon Odette (Rai) intensified further Thursday, December 16, 2021.

Placed under TCWS 4 were Southern Leyte, and the eastern portion Bohol (Talibon, Trinidad, San Miguel, Dagohoy, Pilar, Sierra Bullones, Jagna, Garcia Hernandez, Duero, Guindulman, Anda, Candijay, Alicia, Mabini, Ubay, Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, Bien Unido) in the Visayas, and Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte including Siargao and Bucas Grande Islands in Mindanao.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Odette intensified further as it endangers the Bucas Grande-Siargao Islands and Dinagat Islands in Mindanao.

It said Odette will continue to move generally westward or west northwestward over the Philippine Sea and the center of its eye was forecast to make its initial landfall in the vicinity of Siargao-Bucas Grande Islands or Dinagat Islands between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. Thursday, December 16.

As of 10 a.m. Thursday, the center of Odette was located at 175 kilometers east of Surigao City, Surigao del Norte, with maximum sustained winds of 185 kilometers per hour (km/h) near the center, gusts of up to 230 km/h, and central pressure of 940 hPa.

The typhoon was moving west northwestward at 25 km/h.

Visayas

Destructive typhoon-force winds will be experienced within any of the areas where TCWS 3 is in effect, and this may bring moderate to heavy damage to structures and vegetation, said Pagasa.

Pagasa said that heavy to torrential rains will be experienced over Caraga, Central Visayas, Misamis Oriental, Camiguin, Southern Leyte, and Negros Occidental Thursday until Friday morning.

Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains will be experienced over Leyte, the southern portions of Eastern Samar and Samar, Zamboanga del Norte, Lanao del Sur, Davao Oriental, Davao de Oro, Davao del Norte, and the rest of Northern Mindanao, and light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Bicol Region, Quezon, and the rest of Visayas, the rest of Zamboanga Peninsula, and mainland Bangsamoro.

Pagasa said Odette was forecast to continue intensifying until it makes landfall Thursday afternoon.

“Considering the recent trend in its intensification, the typhoon may reach a pre-landfall peak intensity of 185 to 195 km/h,” it said. (SunStar Philippines)
