Meditalk: Wants home relief for hemorrhoids

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Good day. I have a problem with hemorrhoids. It’s really uncomfortable. I really wanted to know the foods that would help me relieve them. I also wanted to know home treatments for this problem.

Thank you and hope you have a wonderful day.

Dear Jackie F.,

I understand how you feel. But, don’t you worry, there are solutions for your problem.

For foods that can help you prevent and relieve your hemorrhoids, you can start by softening your stool and prevent yourself from straining by adding more fiber to your diet. But, add fiber slowly. Otherwise, you might have gas and bloating. Go for leafy vegetables, fruit, beans, and whole-grain breads and cereals. You can also get fiber supplements if you find it hard to get veggies. And don’t forget to drink lots of water, so the fiber can do what it is supposed to do.

Now, here’s what you can do at home for your problem. You can start with non-prescription creams and wipes -- or probably, just a small ice pack that you can apply over the area -- to ease the pain and swelling that you are experiencing. You can also soak in a warm bath for two to three times a day, for 10-15 minutes each time. You can also go for a “sitz bath” pan that can fit in your toilet seat. An over-the-counter stool softener can also help and would make it easier for you to go. You can take over-the-counter pain relievers for your discomfort.

Of course, if this doesn’t help, go and see your doctor.

Good luck!

Dr. Fritz
