Lacson: What would you do if today is the last day of the Earth?

THIS is the question that lingered for me and my husband after watching the movie Don't Look Up on Netflix. If you haven't watched it yet, you may want to spend your free time to go see it knowing that it features big stars such as Meryll Streep, Leonardo di Caprio, Jennifer Lawrence, and Cate Blanchett.

Well, for a start, for me the movie feels like a good breather after all the stresses that we have experienced beating the year-end targets and deadlines as it is light and entertaining to watch. Well, at some point, the acting and scenes are hilarious given that the cast is composed of multi-awarded actors, but the irony of these high-caliber stars doing light roles is indeed refreshing, at least for me.

I need not elaborate on the complete plot of the movie but to me, it is a parody of the microcosm of political and economic complexities that affect the decision making not only in a country but in the world. Amidst the impending tragedy of a comet destroying the planet and all of mankind, the movie shows the interplay of power and money versus the common good of the people. It shows that greed is a game-changer and it often serves as the main driving force in the government, but somehow, the movie redeems itself by showing that greed can also lead to your destruction and demise.

So, going back to the question. I haven't given my answer yet to my husband and I was contemplating as to how I'll spend the last day of the Earth. Certainly, I will be with my husband and my two sons. I would love to spend it in a cold, serene place surrounded by woods. We will have a sumptuous meal together and stay in front of the fireplace talking about the good memories of our lives. That is how I want to spend it. No buzz, no fuss. Just a quiet, peaceful time with the people I love the most.

As we usher in the new year, let us be reminded that no amount of fame, material wealth, and power will ever save us from doom. What will save us is our innate kindness, faith in God, and the warmth and love of the people we treasure the most. These are the only things that will matter when we cross over from this physical world.
