Meditalk: Wants to do testicular exam by himself

DEAR Dr. Fritz,

Please call me T.T. I really wanted to examine my testicles by myself as I am almost 50 and I am a bit concerned about my health. I heard some men are doing this, But, I don’t know how. Please tell me.

Thanks and Happy New Year.

T.T.

Dear T.T.,

I appreciate your concern for your health. Actually, we are suggesting a self-exam on a regular basis and you can do it once a month, or even just once a year. But, if you do have problems, or you notice a lump or other changes in how your testicles feel or look, you must tell your doctor ASAP.

A self-exam of your testicles is quick and painless. You can do this in only a few simple steps:

Take a warm bath to let the heat relax the skin of your scrotum.

Then, hold your penis out of the way.

Examine your testicles one at a time using both of your hands. Now, roll it between your thumb and fingers.

You have to feel if there is a pea-sized lump. If you see or feel something like that, see your doctor. Maybe, this is nothing serious, but it's important that you tell your doctor about it.

Don’t forget to check for any changes in the size, shape, or feel of your testicles. Your other testicle may be of a different shape or size or might hang lower than the other. That’s normal.

Now, if you feel a cordlike structure behind each testicle, it is normal. It is the part of the scrotum that stores and moves sperm.

Now, go and have fun checking your testicles. Good luck!
