Woman killed in Basilan town explosion

A WOMAN was killed after an improvised explosive device (IED) went off early Tuesday, January 11, 2022, in Sumisip, Basilan province, the police said.

Police Major Faisal Tandico, Sumisip police chief, identified the fatality as Junayra Saad, 47, single, a resident of Upper Benembengan village, Sumisip.

Tandico said Saad went to a creek near their residence to take a bath around 6:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 11, when she accidentally stepped on a string attached to the IED, which was placed under a rubber tree, thus the explosion.

Tandico said the victim died on the spot from multiple shrapnel wounds in different parts of her body.

He said investigation continues to determine the motive and identify the persons behind the incident. (SunStar Zamboanga)
