A PERSON deprived of liberty (PDL) who was shot by his fellow inmates while escaping the maximum security compound of the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) has died, Bureau of Corrections (Bucor) spokesperson Gabriel Chaclag said on Wednesday, January 19, 2022.

Chaclag said the fatality, who was about to complete his sentence, was shot by the suspects for refusing to open the gate as they escaped.

The inmate died on Tuesday, January 18, while being treated at the Ospital ng Muntinlupa.

Four PDLs escaped from the detention facility early Monday dawn, January 17. They fired shots while escaping, hitting the inmate and four jail personnel.

Chaclag said two jail personnel were already in stable condition but are still confined in a hospital, while the two others were already released.

Two of the escapees were killed in a manhunt operation, while the two others, identified as Chris Ablas and Drakilou Falcon, remained at large.

Chaclag said they have already coordinated with the families of Ablas and Falcon to identify their whereabouts.

“Hinihikayat po namin sila na 'wag nila kunsintihin itong dalawa na ito. Mas mabauti po sumuko po sila para magkaroon ng pag-asa baka sakali pa sila makapagbagong-buhay,” he said in a television interview.

(We encouraged them not to tolerate the two inmates. They better surrender.)

Chaclag admitted there could be a breach in the physical security of the detention facility where the escapees were locked up, as it recently underwent renovation.

“May mga ibang factor lang na doon tayo nagkulang siguro sa physical security kasi nagkaroon ng renovation sa building na yun recently. May mga security feature pa na dapat mailagay doon at siguro yun ang pinagsalamantalahan ng mga tumakas na ito,” he said.

(There were other factors that may have contributed to the escape, like physical security, because the building was recently renovated. There are security features that we need to install, and the inmates might have seen this as a chance to escape.) (SunStar Philippines)
