‘Dumpsite’ at SRP now gone, only typhoon debris remains

THE Cebu City Government has now complied with the guidelines set by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) in creating a temporary transfer station at the South Road Properties (SRP).

This is what Environmental Management Bureau Central Visayas (EMB 7) spokesperson Cindylyn Pepito told SunStar Cebu Friday, January 21, 2022.

Pepito said most of the domestic waste that was disposed in the area during the implementation of Oplan Barug Sugbo has already been hauled by the city government.

What remains are the organic debris that were recovered after Typhoon Odette, Pepito added.

Pepito said for a site to become a transfer station, waste being stored there should only stay in less than 24 hours according to Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2003.

Cebu City Councilor Joel Garganera previously said the government is temporarily disposing of the debris it has collected during the Oplan Barug Sugbo.

Garganera said using the SRP as a temporary transfer station was a drastic measure during the clean-up period following the devastation of the typhoon.

During its citywide cleanup from January 8 to 9, the city was able to collect 1,400 tons of debris and garbage.
