THE Board of Governors of the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) have agreed to let the Governors’ Cup continue next month.
This development came to be after a meeting led by PBA chairman Ricky Vargas on Monday. With the Covid situation in Metro Manila steadily improving, the league deemed it prudent to continue with the import-laden tournament that was halted late last year due to the sudden rise of Covid-19 cases.
“As cases of Covid-19 infection in Metro Manila start to slow down, the PBA Board of Governors during a board meeting on Monday, unanimously agreed to resume action in the Governors’ Cup by the first week of February,” read the league’s statement.
Up next for the league is getting the approval of local government units for teams to conduct scrimmages. Once the PBA receives that, teams will then have 10 days to get themselves going once again for the conference’s restart. The PBA has to get approvals from LGUs like Quezon City, Parañaque, Pasay, Pasig, Mandaluyong and San Juan.
The PBA already has the endorsement of the Games and Amusements Board, through its chairman, Baham Mitra, to resume its tournament.
So far, the Magnolia Hotshots are leading the standings with a perfect 3-0 (win-loss) card followed by the Meralco Bolts at 2-0. The NLEX Road Warriors have also gotten off to a fast start, racking up four wins against a single loss.
