PH loses to Australia in gallant stand

AUSTRALIA is one of the world’s powerhouse teams in women’s football today. Australia’s women’s squad, the Matildas, is currently ranked as the 11th best women’s football team in the world.

Despite being ranked 53 spots lower at 64th, the Philippines put up a good fight that’s worthy of respect despite losing to Australia, 4-0, in their Group B match in the AFC Women’s Asian Cup on Jan. 23, 2022 at the Mumbai Football Arena in Mumbai, India.

A few days back Australia demolished the Philippines’ Southeast Asian neighbor, Indonesia, via a lopsided scoreline of 18-0.

Australia was poised for another one-sided win but the Philippines had different thoughts.

The Philippines held Australia scoreless in the opening half. It was star striker Sam Kerr that ended the deadlock and scored the opening goal in the 51st minute.

Philippines center back Dominique Randle made a crucial mistake and scored an own goal in the 53rd minute to give Australia a 2-0 lead.

From then on, Australia found its rhythm with midfielder Emily van Egmond hitting the back of the net in the 67th minute.

Aussie forward Mary Fowler added another goal in the 87th minute to seal it for Australia.

On the other hand, Thailand bounced back from its upset loss to the Philippines with a 4-0 win over Indonesia.

Australia still holds the top spot of Group B with six points from back-to-back wins. Thailand moves up to second place with three points and only ahead of the Philippines in goal difference.

The Philippines takes on Indonesia in its last Group B match on Thursday, Jan. 27, 2022, while Australia faces Thailand.

The Philippines is in a good position to advance to quarterfinals. If the Philippines defeats Indonesia and Thailand loses to Australia, then the Philippines and Australia both advance to the quarterfinals.
