THE Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA) advised overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) in Kazakhstan on Friday, January 28, to maintain neutrality amid the prevailing political tension in the central Asian nation.
In its Advisory 06-2022, POEA Administrator Bernard Olalia said OFWs must avoid being party for or against the ongoing mass protests in the host country.
"The Embassy advised the Filipino community in Kazakhstan to remain calm and vigilant, and to maintain their neutrality and avoid participating in any gatherings or meetings that are concerned with the political situation of the said country," said Olalia.
The POEA also said OFWs must not hesitate to coordinate with their employers and the authorities if needed.
The POEA also said that the Philippine Embassy in Moscow may be reached through its hotline +7(906)738-2538 for any concerns or emergencies.
The advisory was issued on the heels of the host government's declaration of a national emergency.
This was brought about by the violent protests and riots particularly in the Almaty and the Mangystau regions.
Data showed there are an estimated 800 to 1,000 Filipinos working in Kazakhstan. (HDT/SunStar Philippines)
