AROUND 100 vendors from Freedom Park and Warwick Barracks will be relocated to the newly inaugurated Interim Market Stalls at Unit 2 of Carbon Public Market.

The stalls comprise Phase 1 of the Carbon Market Modernization Project undertaken under the joint venture agreement between the Cebu City Government and Megawide Construction Corp. (MCC).

The old Unit 2 Carbon market burned down in 1998, and the affected vendors had to install makeshift tents to continue plying their wares in the area.

Louie Ferrer, chairman of Cebu2World Development Inc. and vice chairman of MCC, said the vendors now have a tidy place to do business with their customers.

Ferrer expects all vendors to be able to transfer to the new site by the second week of February.

“So maybe, we will be all done by the second week so we can proceed with our construction work at the Freedom Park and Warwicks,” Ferrer said in Cebuano.

To vendors at the Freedom Park and Warwick Barracks who earlier staged a protest rally against their transfer to the Interim Market Stalls, Ferrer said the MCC will continue to negotiate with them.

Ferrer also welcomed the move of militant group Gabriela to seek a congressional inquiry on the issue during the 18th Congress.

“This is even much better so we can explain to the people and to the entire Philippines our objective and our vision for Carbon market. I thank them for giving us a venue where we can share our plan to the entire Philippines and maybe to the whole world,” Ferrer said.

Also inaugurated on Friday, Jan. 28, 2022, was the Sto. Niño chapel at the Senior Citizens Park highlighting a 30-foot image of the Child Jesus weighing 2,000 kilograms. (TPT)
