FIFTY-TWO people in Cebu City have died of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) in the first 27 days of January, of whom 45 died in the last eight days, Councilor Joel Garganera, deputy chief implementer of the city’s Emergency Operations Center (EOC), said Friday, Jan. 28, 2022.

“In the past one week, the number of validated and verified deaths has been noticeable. It has an average of 5-6 deaths per day, making 45 deaths in one week,” said Garganera, who believes the deaths were caused by the Omicron variant of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

Of the 45 who died, 29 were unvaccinated, 11 had only a first dose, which the EOC considers to be unvaccinated, which means 89 percent of those who died were unvaccinated. Five were fully vaccinated.

He said that in the third wave of Covid-19 that began in the middle of 2021, the city’s active cases reached over 4,000. But this time, during this fourth wave, active cases are now at 7,479.

Barangays with the most number of active cases are Guadalupe, 645 active cases; Lahug, 416; Tisa, 334; Talamban, 333; Apas, 317; Camputhaw, 298; Capitol Site, 279; Labangon, 275; Mabolo, 259; and Sambag 2, with 219 cases.

On Jan. 27, however, the city’s daily positivity rate, or the percentage of people tested who came out positive, dropped to 36.80 percent from 42.90 percent on Jan. 26.

Cebu City reported 474 new cases on Jan. 27, bringing active cases to 7,663, of which 7,479 were confirmed and 184 still for validation.

A positivity rate below five percent for two weeks is an indicator that an epidemic is controlled. (PAC, CTL)
