Cebu City logs below 7,000 active cases for 2nd straight day

CEBU City reported under 7,000 active coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases on Feb. 1, 2022, the second straight day it did so.

The City Emergency Operations Center (EOC) logged 6,606 active cases on Tuesday, Feb. 1, 2022, a 5.42% decrease in active cases from the 6,985 active cases reported last Jan. 31.

Based on the EOC data, 235 fresh cases and 610 recoveries were recorded on Feb. 1.

However, the daily positivity rate (DPR) of Cebu City on Feb. 1 slightly increased to 27.36 percent from 859 individuals tested. Cebu City’s DPR last Jan. 31 was 26.73 percent from 621 individuals tested for the coronavirus.

Cebu City’s DPR must be less than five percent for the last two weeks to indicate that the city has controlled the transmission of Covid-19, according to the World Health Organization.

The positivity rate is the percentage of all tests performed that come out positive.

The EOC reported a total of 70 Covid-19 deaths for the whole month of January.

Cebu City reported its highest number of fatalities in June 2020 with 367 during the first wave of infections in the city.

In August 2021, the city reported 355 fatalities during another wave of infections, this time believed to be driven by the Delta variant of Sars-CoV-2, the virus that causes Covid-19.

The other month in 2020 that saw a three-digit level of fatalities was July (174).

Cebu City reported 101 deaths in July 2021, and two months later, it logged 145 deaths in September 2021.

Downward trend

Octa Research fellow Dr. Guido David noted on Wednesday, Feb. 2, the downward trajectory of coronavirus disease (Covid-19) cases in seven highly urbanized cities (HUCs) in the Visayas.

David was referring to the cities of Lapu-Lapu, Ormoc, Tacloban, Bacolod, Cebu, Iloilo and Mandaue.

But he said Bacolod, Cebu, Iloilo and Mandaue remain under high risk classification, while Lapu-Lapu, Ormoc and Tacloban were classified as high risk for Covid-19.

Positivity rates in the seven areas remain at very high risk, from 26 percent to 75 percent.

Bacolod’s positivity rate was at 42 percent, Cebu City at 26 percent, Iloilo City at 35 percent, Lapu-Lapu at 36 percent, Mandaue at 29 percent, Ormoc at 75 percent and Tacloban at 24 percent.

The average daily attack rate (Adar) of Bacolod was at 27.26, Cebu City at 40.32, Iloilo City at 64.06, Lapu-Lapu at 39.83 and Mandaue at 29.99, placing them under the “very high risk” classification.

Adar refers to the average number of new cases within a certain period per 100,000 individuals. (KAL / SunStar Philippines)
