THE Philippine Veterinary Medical Association (PVMA) has named Negros Occidental Provincial Veterinarian Renante Decena as this year's outstanding veterinarian in rural and extension service.

The association, in a letter on Decena, congratulated the head of the province's veterinary office for being awarded the PVMA Outstanding Veterinarian in Rural and Extension Service Award for 2022.

The awarding will be conducted on the sidelines of the two-day 89th PVMA Scientific Conference and Annual Convention on February 17 and 18.

"I am humbled and honored for this award by the PVMA in my 37th year as a practicing government veterinarian," Decena said.

He attributed the recognition to their efforts on making the livestock farming as one of economic drivers in the province, especially the pig industry despite the African Swine Fever (ASF) threat.

"We still maintain our surplus [in hogs]," the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) head said, adding that "in chicken, goat and large ruminants as well which become the source of income of common tao here."

"We position it [the livestock industry] as an alternative to the sugar industry," Decena also said.

In 2018, the provincial veterinarian also received the Presidential Lingkod Bayan awardee in Western Visayas by the Civil Service Commission (CSC) through its annual Search for Outstanding Government Workers.

Decena dedicated the recognition to the livestock and poultry industry stakeholders especially the farmers "whom I deserve to be of service.

Been in the government service for over three decades now, he was appointed as provincial veterinarian of Negros Occidental in 1994 but had started working under the Department of Agriculture (DA) in 1984.

He was a veterinary quarantine officer before they were devolved to Provincial Government in 1991 due to the implementation of the Local Government Code.

Decena became the action officer in the prevention of the entry of foot and mouth disease during the time of former president Fidel Ramos.

In 2008, he was also awarded as the Outstanding Provincial Veterinarian in the Philippines by the Philippine Veterinary Drug Association.

Decena said he shares his latest recognition to his Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO) and local government unit partners "who inspired me to do more for our clients."

"Also, to Governor Eugenio Jose Lacson who fully supports the PVO program and projects. Lastly, to my wife and children who never complained despite that my time and energy were mostly spent for work," the multi-awarded veterinarian said.
