Gone are the days when people go to coffee shops just to grab their caffeine fix and leave. Nowadays, a coffee shop is more like a hang-out place where people catch up with friends; a co-working space where people study or do their work; a safe space where people enjoy their cup of coffee alone without feeling lonely or awkward.

When going to coffee places, people look for a nice ambiance aside from a quality coffee as it can transform drinking a simple cup of coffee into a wonderful experience.

Commonly Uncommon Coffee is not technically new to the coffee scene. One of its owners, John Park, started it out on Instagram as a mini coffee blog where he recommended and reviewed coffee he tried from his travels around the world. His love for coffee piqued his interest in learning how to brew coffee like a pro.

Fast forward to December 2021, John along with his friends Wynne and Joby, launched Commonly Uncommon Coffee as a coffee shop.

Opened daily from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., this newly opened café is not your typical one as it evokes the mood for productivity yet remains chill and lively. Modern industrial elements add to the place’s ambiance: industrial lighting fixtures, a silver and long bar slash counter with coffee equipment, a circle-shaped neon light on the wall, a contemporary triangle-shaped concrete common seat, and a modern lit wall. The owners shared that they just played around the old space to come up with the interior, with some fixtures even untouched.

At its counter, customers can watch how the coffee and tea are prepared, entertaining both budding coffee enthusiasts and serious coffee experts. Al fresco is also available for those who are more comfortable to enjoy their orders in an open-air setting.

For its menu, John curated and concocted them himself like the cold brew, C.U.C cream coffee, a cold brew with vanilla syrup and coffee-infused milk foam called Crossroad Specials, and Cascara Fizz, to name a few. Pastries and meals are also available to pair your choice of beverage with things like its gooey ooey oat fudge bar, pork belly aburi and pan-fried salmon with green goddess yogurt sauce, among others.

This modern café also serves single origin cold brew-in-a-can which is a first from a local brand, with cute, and fun label designs that would surely make you want to collect all its designs.

Choose between “Have A Nice Day,” made of Ethiopia Sidamo Natura beans with hints of peach, mangosteen, and cacao flavors, which is perfect to kick off your day; and “It’s Okay To Have A Sh*tty Day,” a beautifully bright cold brew to blow away bad jujus. It also has Valentine’s edition designs.

The canned cold brew keeps fresh for up to 30 days with almost no flavor decline. Now, you can replenish your coffee supplies monthly. This concept is also ideal for those who are always on the go.

People might already have their own go-to coffee places but it’s certainly worth checking out the new places that have popped up in the city, like Commonly Uncommon Coffee nestled in lifestyle arcade Crossroads in Banilad, Cebu City.

It might be your new favorite café.
