ABOUT 9,000 teachers in Negros Occidental will serve as Board of Election Inspectors (BEI) during the national and local elections in May 2022.

Lawyer Roberto Salazar, acting provincial election supervisor, said a total of 2,906 clustered precincts will be opened on Election Day with three BEIs each who will serve as a chairman and members.

Salazar, however, said this does not include the supporting staff in the polling precincts.

A Department of Education (DepEd) supervising officer, usually a school principal, will also be assigned at the polling precincts, he said.

Teachers who are serving as BEIs will receive honorariums and allowances, the Comelec official said.

A BEI chairman gets a P7,000 in honorarium, a member will receive P6,000 while a DepEd supervising officer will be given P5,000.

Other allowances include travel, communication, and anti-Covid allowances.

Salazar said honorariums and allowances are also subject to a 20-percent tax rate based on the ruling of the Bureau of Internal Revenue.

The refresher training for those who will serve in the upcoming polls has already begun this month.
