SOME 100 kids aged 5 to 11 availed of the first round of pediatric vaccines at SM City Bacolod for protection against coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

The mall is among the first establishments in the city for the on-site vaccination, in collaboration with the City of Bacolod, and the Department of Health through the Bacolod Emergency Operations Center (EOC).

"The kids in this age group are among the most vulnerable to Covid-19 and it is about time we extend the necessary protection to them as well," said Em Ang, EOC executive director.

Ang also thanked the mall for being a consistent private sector partner in the city's drive against the virus.

Dr. Chris Sorongon, EOC deputy for medical data analysis, also echoed the same sentiments on SM's cooperation.

"With the pandemic already reaching the two-year mark, the vaccination for this younger set of minors will protect more, increase the vaccination rate and help us all get back to the new normal way of life, like classes," Sorongon added.

Likewise, SM City Bacolod made sure that the children would have a positive and safe experience while getting their shots. These efforts of the mall were cited by the LGU for bringing in activities that would ease the anxiety of both the children and parents during the vaccination launch. Kids enjoyed the magic show that served as entertainment while they waited in the designated area for their turn at the jab. Mascots of the mall's amusement shops came by to greet the young crowd. Outside the pediatric vaccination area, vaccinated kids could avail themselves of fun rides, treats and even create mementos at the photo op spots.

"We have this kid-friendly atmosphere so that our SuperKids can feel comfortable," shared mall manager George Jardiolin. On the importance of getting vaxxed, Jardiolin adds that encouraging parents and guardians to have their kids immunized is the best way to keep them safe and protected. With the easing of restrictions according to the Alert Level status, malls and establishments have gradually opened to accommodate minors. Schools are expected to follow soon when the government grants permission for classes to resume.

"When everyone in the family is protected, we can enjoy more activities together like safe malling, dining out, watching in a theater, or anywhere outside the safe confines of our homes," shares Jardiolin.

SM mall will continue to host the vaccination drive, expanding now to accommodate kids 5 to 11 years old. While this day was the launch in commercial establishments, more kids will be able to get jabbed as soon as more stocks of the vaccine are available. In November 2021, the mall also welcomed the vaccination of the 12 to 17 years old group. Regular Resbakuna schedules are posted and updated through the official portals of the local government unit.
